Chapter One:
eCommerce Platforms
eCommerce platforms exist to provide you with the best creation, management and growth tools for your online business.
They tend to offer ‘all-in-one’ solutions when it comes to eCommerce.
With that said, it’s vitally important to choose the right foundations to build your eCommerce store upon.
In this chapter, we’ll road test and review the most popular eCommerce platforms in the world.
Shopify
With over a million businesses onboard, Shopify is one of the world’s foremost eCommerce platforms.
Here are a few ways you can sell online with Shopify:
- Physical and digital products
- Subscriptions with recurring payments
- Dropshipping products
- Point-of-sale (POS)
Positives & Negatives
- Shopify has one of the largest collections of design themes with over 70+ official themes and hundreds of third-party themes.
- There are 100+ payment processors on offer including a wide range of cryptocurrency payment processors.
- Extensive documentation, courses and tutorials are avaliable on how to get the most out of your Shopify store.
- Shopify charges you an additional transaction fee if you do not use their payment processor which can hurt your gross margins.
- Simple functionality that other platforms provide out of the box requires additional apps. This can result in increased operating costs and complexities.
- Shopify templates are coded in a proprietary language, making it harder to find web developers who can customize your store.
Pricing
Shopify offers three different pricing plans: Shopify Lite, Shopify and Shopify Plus.
Shopify Lite costs $9 per month.
Try Shopify Lite free for 14 days by signing up here.
Shopify has three pricing tiers:
- Basic Shopify at $29 per month
- Shopify at $79 per month
- Advanced Shopify at $299 per month
Try Shopify free for 14 days by signing up here.
Shopify Plus starts at $2,000 per month.
My Score & Recommendation
Score: 8 out of 10
The ace up Shopify’s sleeve is its passionate community of users. Although the Shopify platform is well-engineered, operating costs can spiral out of control if you are not careful.
If you are new to eCommerce, immersing yourself in Shopify’s online courses can teach you how to best succeed with eCommerce. There’s even a series of local Meetups where Shopify users come together to network and share their knowledge.
If you want an online store and be a part of an eCommerce community, Shopify could be your best eCommerce website builder solution.
BigCommerce
Launched in Sydney, in 2009, BigCommerce has grown to become one of the leading eCommerce platforms in the world.
Here are some of BigCommerce’s key eCommerce features:
- Physical and digital product sales
- POS integration
- Facebook, Google & Amazon marketplace integration
- Multi-currency checkout
Positives & Negatives
- Zero additional transaction fees mean you only pay the transaction fee of whatever payment provider you choose to use.
- Hundreds of free and premium themes give trial you the ability to find a theme that fits your design requirements.
- BigCommerce comes loaded with powerful features out of the box that other platforms would make to you pay extra for.
- No inbuilt support for recurring payments meaning you’ll need to install additional apps.
- The website page builder isn’t as smooth and streamlined as other competing platforms which may make it harder to use.
- BigCommerce online stores are not as fast to load as other competing platforms which could hurt your conversions.
Pricing
BigCommerce Essentials has three pricing tiers:
- Standard at $29.95 per month
- Plus at $79.95 per month
- Pro at $299.95 per month
Try BigCommerce Essentials free for 15 days by signing up here.
My Score & Recommendation
Score: 9 out of 10
The two big draw cards for BigCommerce are value for money and no additional transaction fees.
When you are selling at high volume, transaction fees can burn your gross profit margins. This becomes an even bigger problem selling low gross margin products.
BigCommerce does come with a slight learning curve so it may not be as good for those who are new to eCommerce. But if you are comfortable with the builder and want the most bang for your buck, BigCommerce may be the best eCommerce platform for you.

- Premium at $72 per month.
Launch your free online store with Square Online by signing up here.
My Score & Recommendation
Score: 8 out of 10
Square Online stands out with its slick and seamless integration with the Square POS suite.
Although the website builder is not as powerful as other platforms, it is a cost-effective solution for small business owners.
If you plan to use Square POS and have a simple online store, then Square Online may be the best eCommerce website builder for you.

- Basic Store at $29 per month
- Plus Store at $79 per month

Get started with your free Shift4Shop online store by signing up here.
My Score & Recommendation
Score: 8 out of 10
Shift4Shop traded as 3dcart until it was acquired and rebranded in November 2020.
3dcart was one of the original eCommerce platforms tracing back its roots to 1997. That means Shift4Shop has benefitted from decades of ongoing product development.
Shift4Shop’s free plan is the most comprehensive free eCommerce tool available right now. The only catch is you need to be living in the United States and use Shift4 Payments to quality for the free plan.
If you qualify for the free plan and have zero budget then Shift4Shop may be the best eCommerce solution for you.
Volusion
Founded in 1999, Volusion is an eCommerce platform that provides everything you need to sell online.
Volusion supports the following features:

Pricing
Volusion offers three pricing tiers:
- Personal at $29 per month
- Professional at $79 per month
- Business at $299 per month.
You can save up to 10% if you sign up for an annual plan.
Try Volusion free for 14 days by signing up here.
My Score & Recommendation
Score: 7 out of 10
Volusion is one of the simplest and easiest to use eCommerce platforms out there. However, it may be too simple.
When compared to other platforms within the price range, Volusion comes short of the mark when it comes to options and integrations. If you feel that other eCommerce tools are too overwhelming, then Volusion’s stripped-back and simple nature may be your saviour.
The limited theme customization options mean you’ll need to make sure the theme designs meet your needs before diving in. If you find a theme that nails your design needs and you like the simplicity of the platform, then Volusion may be right for you.
PinnacleCart
Founded in 2003, PinnacleCart is an eCommerce solution engineered to grow your sales.

- Offers the ability to host PinnacleCart on your web server which can increase security and control.
- In-depth SEO controls allow you to fine-tune almost all SEO aspects of your online store.
- A limited number of online store theme designs reduces the chance of finding a theme that fits your needs.
- You can only make minor tweaks and adjustments to your chosen theme, limiting design flexibility.
- A limited number of apps/integrations are available when compared to other eCommerce website builders.
Pricing
PinnacleCart offers three pricing tiers for their self-hosted product:
- Standard at $79/month
- Advanced at $199/month
- Enterprise is at custom pricing
If you wish to host PinnacleCart on your server, you’ll need to request a custom price.
Launch your online store with PinnacleCart by signing up here.
My Score & Recommendation
Score: 6 out of 10
PinnacleCart has been around for almost two decades, making it one of the oldest eCommerce website builders. However, its features have recently started to lag behind other more modern platforms.
What makes PinnacleCart different is you can engage them for marketing services. Although I haven’t dealt with the service team, having your software and service team combined could be advantageous.
So if PinnacleCart’s features pique your interest and you are wanting someone else to set up your eCommerce store, consider dropping them a line.
Sellfy
Founded in 2007, Sellfy helps creators sell their products hassle-free online all from one place.

Positives & Negatives
- A simple and easy user interface makes setting up and customizing your online store a breeze.
- Inbuilt simple email marketing, cart abandonment and upselling features can help increase sales.
- Download limiting feature makes it great for those wanting to sell software or digital files.
- The limited number of integrations can make it difficult to connect with other software.
- The limited number of design modules can make it difficult to achieve certain webpage layouts.
- No SEO controls make it difficult to optimize your online store for better Google Search rankings.
Pricing
Sellfy comes in three pricing tiers:
- Starter at $29 per month
- Business at $59 per month
- Premium at $129 per month.
You can save 34% by signing up for an annual plan.
Launch your free online store by signing up to Sellfy here.
My Score & Recommendation
Score: 6 out of 10
Sellfy is a simple and easy-to-use eCommerce platform with a few trick features. It’s one of the few eCommerce platforms to offer its inbuilt email marketing tool.
However, Sellfy is almost too simple, lacking the power and features of other eCommerce website builders within the price range. For example, the lack of different themes and design modules makes it near impossible to achieve a unique design.
But, If you appreciate the simple and stripped-back nature of Sellfy and what it comes with out of the box, then it may be a good choice for you.
ShopBase
ShopBase is an eCommerce platform that helps you build dropshipping and print-on-demand businesses.
Here are some of ShopBase’s key eCommerce features:

Pricing
ShopBase comes with three pricing tiers:

- Standard Base at $59 per month
- Pro Base at $249 per month.
You can save up to 10% if you sign up for an annual plan.
Try ShopBase free for 14 days by signing up here.
My Score & Recommendation
Score: 8 out of 10
ShopBase is a niche eCommerce platform designed for print-on-demand, white-label and dropshipping businesses. If you do not plan to create an online store around any of these niches, you should look elsewhere.
One of ShopBase’s biggest drawcards is its native integration AliExpress. This makes it easier and more efficient when it comes to running a dropshipping business.
So, if you are wanting to get into dropshipping, print-on-demand, or white labelling then you should consider ShopBase.
Chapter two:
Website Builders with eCommerce
Website builders are all-in-one website-building platforms that also support eCommerce features.
Although not only intended for eCommerce, these platforms can run your online store as well as your non-eCommerce web pages.
These platforms can work well if your business is a hybrid of eCommerce and non-eCommerce products and services.
In this chapter, we’ll review the most popular website builders that support eCommerce

- Email marketing automation and lead generation tools are limited when compared with others.
- A lack of auto-save and ‘undo’ commands can lead you to lose hours of work on your eCommerce store if you forget to save your work.
Pricing
Squarespace offers three pricing tiers that include eCommerce:

- Basic Commerce at $26/month
- Advanced Commerce at $40/month
You can save up to 30% by signing up for an annual plan.
Explore Squarespace eCommerce by signing up for your free 14-day trial here.
My Score & Recommendation
Score: 7 out of 10
The number one thing that separates Squarespace from the rest is its beautiful design templates. If you are starting an eCommerce store in an industry where aesthetics are important, you should consider Squarespace.
With that said, Squarespace eCommerce is not as robust as other dedicated eCommerce platforms.
If your requirements are simple, Squarespace eCommerce may be the right fit for you.

- Supports a wide variety of different eCommerce selling methods, providing great value for money.
- Wix POS simplifies the management of your online and physical store sales all through a sleek Wix tablet with Wix POS pre-installed.
- Wix relies on large amounts of Javascript to function, which can hurt your online store speed and conversion rate.
- Email automation is limited to simple email sequences, lacking the power offered by other platforms.

- VIP at $38/month.
These Prices are for signing up for an annual billing subscription.

My Score & Recommendation
Score: 8 out of 10
Two big things make Wix stand out from the rest: versatility and value for money. Wix is one of the cheapest eCommerce platforms out there.
It also offers a wide range of eCommerce features that competing platforms charge a lot more for.
So if you are wanting to start selling online in a wide variety of different ways while not spending a fortune, consider giving Wix eCommerce a try.
Weebly
Powering over 50 million sites, Weebly is a popular website building platform that supports eCommerce.
Weebly eCommerce supports the following key features:
- Physical products & digital product sales
- Online services sales
- Donations
Positives & Negatives
- Inbuilt integration with Square makes it one of the best platforms for online stores that have a significant POS presence.
- The module-based website builder makes it easy to create custom page layouts.
- Premade automated cart abandonment email and message sequences make it quick and easy to recover lost sales.
- There’s only a small range of template design choices meaning you may need to spend more time tweaking your website to fit your needs.
- SEO can be more challenging to do as Weebly outputs your website’s code in Javascript instead of HTML/CSS.
- Weebly content layout shifts (CLS) scored poorly when I ran it through multiple speed tests which may hurt your SEO and conversions.
Pricing
Weebly offers three pricing tiers:
- Professional at $20/month
- Performance at $30/month
- Premium at $85/month
You’ll save 10% by signing up for an annual plan.
Launch your free online store with Weebly by signing up here.
My Score & Recommendation
Score: 8 out of 10
The biggest feature Weebly holds over the rest is its in-depth integration with Square. Since Square acquired Weebly back in 2018, the tool has progressively become all about eCommerce.
If you sell predominately online but want to use Square as your POS, Weebly may be the best eCommerce platform to build your online store.
Webflow
With over 2 million users, Webflow has grown to become a popular choice for designers who want to create websites and online stores.
Besides online selling, Webflow eCommerce supports high levels of design customizations
Positives & Negatives
- A simple yet powerful visual webpage builder allows you to customize the design of your entire eCommerce website.
- One of the only platforms that allow you to completely customize the design of product pages and checkout page designs.
- The staging server allows you to test changes to your online store before publishing them to your live server.
- The platform has been designed for designers so if you do not come from a digital design background you may find it difficult to use.
- eCommerce support is limited to simple physical or digital product sales at the moment.
- Does not support POS integration, mobile store management, staff permissions, or manual tax rules.
Pricing
Webflow eCommerce comes in three pricing plans:
- Standard at $29
- Plus at $74
- Advanced at $212/month
These prices are based on signing up for an annual plan.
Try WebFlow for free by signing up for your account here.
My Score & Recommendation
Score: 7 out of 10
There’s a reason why so many designers advocate for Webflow.
It’s the only eCommerce platform that has been designed for designers. So, if you’re a designer needing to achieve a completely custom eCommerce store design, Webflow may be the best eCommerce option for you.
Webflow is still lacking some important eCommerce features such as subscription and POS support. But if you only need to sell physical or digital goods, Webflow eCommerce can meet your needs.
Ucraft
Trusted by over 360,000 active users, Ucraft’s mission is to develop easy-to-use tools for everyone to start their online business.
Ucraft supports the following online selling features:

- 0% transaction fee across all plans that support eCommerce which helps to increase the profitability of each product you sell.
- No support for recurring payments or donations currently, limiting your options on how to receive online payments.
- POS support is limited to only Square POS at this point which can make it difficult if you are using another POS.
- Webpage builder isn’t as streamlined as other tools. You cannot change your online store template once you’ve selected one.
Pricing
Ucraft offers three eCommerce pricing tiers:
- Pro Website at $10/month
- Pro Shop at $21/month
- Unlimited at $69/month
Pricing is for signing up for an annual subscription.
You can try Ucraft by signing up for a free 14-day trial here
My Score & Recommendation
Score: 6 out of 10
Ucraft is one of the cheapest website-building platforms that support eCommerce. The tool isn’t as polished when compared to the other eCommerce platforms.
However, it does offer a decent amount of features, designs and eCommerce functionality.
With that said, if cost is your biggest concern, Ucraft may be the best eCommerce store tool for you.
Zyro
Established in 2019, Zyro is a relatively new entry into the online store building space.
The tool supports the following:
- Once-off physical and digital product sales
- Gift cards
- Coupons
- Selling on marketplaces such as Amazon
Positives & Negatives
- A simple, fool-proof visual website builder that can create several web page designs based on A.I.
- Supports over 50 different payment methods. Additionally, supports automatic shipping calculations from six major postage providers.
- Built-in automated cart abandonment emails helping you to recover lost sales opportunities.
- eCommerce is limited to once-off sales and does not support recurring payments or ticket and event sales.
- There’s a limited number of pre-made eCommerce templates available which could make it more difficult to find a design that you like.
- Lacking in the number of page layout modules and elements when compared to other popular eCommerce platforms.
Pricing
Zyro comes in four pricing tiers:
- Basic at $2.90/month
- Unleased at $3.90/month
- eCommerce at $9.90/month
- eCommerce Plus at $14.90/month
You can try any one of Zyro’s plans by signing up for your free account here.
My Score & Recommendation
Score: 8 out of 10
What separates Zyro from the other eCommerce builders is its AI creation tools.
Being a relatively new tool, Zyro has been designed to use a large amount of AI to help you set up your online store. For example, the tool can generate several website design templates that you can choose from based on your goals, style and industry.
The tool has only been recently expanded to include eCommerce. With that said, you can only sell once-off physical products in the tool’s current state.
If you are looking for an affordable and modern eCommerce solution for simple product sales, consider giving Zyro ago.
Chapter three:
WordPress eCommerce
With over 41% of websites running the software, WordPress.org is by far the most widely used website building platform.
WordPress can be easily used for eCommerce through a wide range of plugins.
You can create powerful, feature-rich online stores with WordPress or find someone that can set one up for you.
In this chapter, we’ll review the most popular ways to make an eCommerce website with WordPress.
WooCommerce
WooCommerce is the most popular eCommerce plugin for WordPress websites. Developed by the same team that made WordPress, WooCommerce is the most native eCommerce platform for WordPress.
WooCommerce can support physical and digital product sales out of the box.
With additional plugins, WooCommerce can support:
- Recurring payments
- Event ticket sales
- Affiliate management & payouts
- Marketplace selling on Facebook, Amazon, eBay etc
- Dropshipping
- Print-on-demand
Positives & Negatives
- Works with almost every major WordPress theme and plugin without requiring any custom coding.
- The WooCommerce plugin is free to use making it one of the most affordable ways to set up a powerful eCommerce store.
- Almost any kind of eCommerce function imaginable can be achieved with a wide range of free and paid plugins.
- Limited scope to customize the layout of WooCommerce product, cart and checkout pages.
- Themes and plugins that do not support WooCommerce need a large amount of custom coding for them to work well.
- Complex WordPress websites with large amounts of plugins can cause breakages with WooCommerce.
Pricing
WooCommerce is a free plugin and does not require any payment to use.
You will need a website server with WordPress installed and a theme that supports WooCommerce if you want to use it.
I recommend hosting with WP Engine which gives you free access to a range of WooCommerce-enabled themes by StudioPress.
Start your WordPress WooCommerce store today with WP Engine & StudioPress here.
My Score & Recommendation
Score: 9 out of 10
WooCommerce is the Swiss Army Knife of eCommerce. It works great for simple product sales and can be extended to support the most complex eCommerce requirements.
The key to having a successful WooCommerce store is choosing the right WordPress theme and website hosting combo. Although I am not currently using WooCommerce on my website, I am using WP Engine to host my website and StudioPress as my theme.
This is a combo that I swear by so if you are looking to set up a WooCommerce store, consider using WP Engine & StudioPress.
Easy Digital Downloads
Easy Digital Downloads is a WordPress plugin that allows you to easily sell digital products online.
The plugin supports the following key features:
- Once-off and recurring sales
- Discount codes
- Product license keys
- Commission payments
- Affiliates payouts
Positives & Negatives
- With dozens of feature extensions, EDD is perhaps the most powerful tool for selling digital downloadables.
- Base plugin is free to use while offering enough features to work for most simple digital selling requirements.
- The plugin and official extensions are well-coded reducing the chance of compatibility issues.
- Paid extension prices can add up to a considerable amount so best do your research beforehand.
- Integrations are not free and need paid extensions which increases operating costs.
- More advanced setups may lead to a large number of plugins making maintenance and management difficult.
Pricing
Easy Digital Downloads offers four pricing tiers:
- Personal Pass at $99/year
- Extended Pass at $199/year
- Professional Pass at $299/year
- All Access Pass at $499/year
Try Easy Digital Downloads risk-free by signing up for 30-day money-back plan here.
My Score & Recommendation
Score: 9 out of 10
Easy Digital Downloads is my favourite way to sell digital products online.
The plugins are well coded, fast and trouble-free. You can pull off some trick features such as limiting downloads to IPs which helps curb piracy and illegal downloads.
Even without the paid extensions, Easy Digital Downloads is the best way to sell digital products with WordPress. Although you’ll most likely need paid extensions to get the most out of it, it will still cost less than most eCommerce website builders.
If you are wanting to sell digital downloadables online, look no further than Easy Digital Downloads and WordPress.
ThriveCart
ThriveCart is one of the best direct response eCommerce solutions for WordPress.
Powerful eCommerce features are on offer with ThriveCart, including:
- One-click upsells
- Cross-sells
- Pre and post checkout order bumps
- Conversion-optimized designs
Positives & Negatives
- Proven conversion-optimized designs can help boost your checkout conversion rates.
- Powerful upsell sequencing allows you to have up to five chained upsell or down-sell sequences.
- A one-time payment model and no checkout percentage fees offer great value for money if you plan on using it for a long time.
- The software is overkill if you do not already have a product inventory that makes sense to do sequential upsell/down sells.
- Cart page speed and loading times are not as fast as WooCommerce which could hurt your conversion rates.
- The tool is designed to sell a single product or service and does not work well when it comes to multi-product checkouts.
Pricing
ThriveCart comes in two once-off, lifetime access pricing options:
- Standard for $495
- Pro for $690
Try ThriveCart risk-free by signing up for a 30-day money-back plan here.
My Score & Recommendation
Score: 8 out of 10
ThriveCart is one of the best eCommerce solutions if you want to build serious upsell and down-sell cart sequences on WordPress. Typically, this eCommerce style works best for businesses with a catalog of digital products and courses.
If you are looking for a more traditional eCommerce cart for WordPress, go with WooCommerce. But if you want the best value-for-money upsell cart system for WordPress, go with ThriveCart.
Cartflows
Launched in November 2018, CartFlows is a relatively new eCommerce solution. for WordPress.
The plugin adds the following eCommerce features to WordPress:
- Sales funnels
- One-click upsells
- Order bumps
- A/B testing
- Landing page templates
Positives & Negatives
- A large variety of funnel templates including matching landing pages, thank you pages, checkouts and order bumps.
- An intelligent pre-checkout offer system can help you increase your order value per customer.
- Offers great value for money when compared to other funnel building software.
- Does not support recurring payments out of the box, meaning that you’ll need to buy WooCommerce Subscriptions.
- As the checkout is powered by WooCommerce, you may need to buy more paid plugins to achieve your desired features.
- There isn’t that much information, guides or tutorials available for CartFlows yet as it is still relatively new.
Pricing
CartFlows offers two pricing options: Annual Licence at $239/year or Lifetime Licence at $999 once-off.
You can sign up and download CartFlows for WordPress here.
My Score & Recommendation
Score: 8 out of 10
The closest eCommerce tool that I could compare CartFlows with is ClickFunnels. The top advantage CartFlows has over ClickFunnels is it costs a lot less while offering similar features.
With that said, it is not as fast to get up and running as ClickFunnels is. You need to have a decent understanding of how WordPress works to get the most out of it.
In conclusion, if you are comfortable with WordPress and you want the features of ClickFunnels, CartFlows is your best eCommerce bet.
Chapter four:
Add-on eCommerce Carts
Add-on eCommerce carts are designed to give eCommerce functionality to non-eCommerce web properties.
For example, you could include a link to your add-on eCommerce cart from a Facebook post, bypassing the need to have an eCommerce website.
With add-on eCommerce carts, you can turn any place on the internet into an eCommerce environment.
In this chapter, we’ll review the most popular add-on eCommerce cart software.
Ecwid
With over 200,000 merchants, Ecwid is the world’s most popular “add-on store builder”.
Ecwid supports the following key eCommerce features:
- Physical and digital product sales
- Recurring payments
- Pay what you want pricing

- There’s not a large variety of apps or integrations available on the Ecwid store, limiting your flexibility.

My Score & Recommendation
Score: 8 out of 10
Although mostly known as a tool that you use to add eCommerce to a non-eCommerce platform,
Ecwid has expanded to include its online store builder. This makes it one of the only ‘free’ eCommerce solutions on the market. With most website builders providing in-built eCommerce, Ecwid’s viability in today’s world is limited.
But, if your budget to launch your online store is zero dollars, Ecwid may be your only option!

My Score & Recommendation
Score: 7 out of 10
Samcart was one of the most dominant cart add-on tools for digital product businesses since it launched in 2014.
Since then, more sophisticated competitors have entered the market offering better value. Samcart still is a solid eCommerce platform, particularly if you sell digital products and courses.
I recommend signing up for a free trial and taking it for a spin to see if you think it is worth it.

SendOwl made its name as being a simple and easy-to-use eCommerce checkout platform for selling digital products. Unfortunately, the brand has been tarnished with counterfeit software and game sellers.
This is a shame as SendOwl is an excellent piece of software. However, some customers may be suspicious of using SendOwl due to the number of fraudulent sellers that have used it in the past.
If you are looking for a simple and easy-to-use add-on eCommerce cart then give SendOwl’s free trial a spin.
